the

In conclusion I
would add that whatever may
be the ultimate decision of
Government, it is
very
desirable
that we should obtain for
once more exact
guidance
information
than is locally procurable of the
best and most improved designs
of modern Gaols, at home, and in the Colonies. When I was in
England
two years ago,
I was
indebted to the Colonial Office for an introduction, through the Home Office, to the Inspectors of Convict Prisons, through whose courtesy I was allowed
every
facility
712
facility for carefully inspecting
the great Convict Establishment at Wormwood Scrubs. This I was given to understand is considered the latest, and most improved type, of Convict prison on the separate system.
I was told that on official application, copies
of the drawings would probably be supplied. If these could be obtained, together
with
examples of good recent types of
any
prisons in India or
Ceylon, they
would prove of great value in
preparing
the working drawings
of the new buildings. I should
like to have as full detail as
possible respecting ventilation
and Sanitary appliances.
I have &c.
H. S. Brown.
Surveyor General.
